On September 5th, Academician Jia Weiping from Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, Professor Li Huating and researchers from the Hansnol Institute of Germany published a study in the journal Cell Metabolism (Cell Metab), demonstrating that consuming foods rich in "resistant starch" can effectively reduce fatty liver, as well as lower triglycerides and liver enzymes associated with liver damage and inflammation.

Resistant starch, a type of starch that is resistant to pancreatic amylase, is found in natural foods such as corn, whole grains, potatoes, beans, and whole grains. Although it cannot be digested in the small intestine, it can be fermented by the microbial flora in the colon, which has a positive impact on metabolism.

The study enrolled 200 patients with fatty liver disease, 100 of whom ate resistant starch (high amylose) from corn; 100 patients were fed equal-energy control starch. Two groups of patients with fatty liver were fed with 20 grams of resistant starch mixed with 300 ml of water twice a day before each meal.

Four months later, the results showed:

  1. fatty liver and weight loss, compared with the control group, resistant starch significantly reduced the content of triglycerides in the liver of participants, the absolute reduction of 9.08%, the relative reduction of 39.42%. In addition, the participants' body weight, BMI and so on were significantly reduced.

  2. Liver damage was improved, and alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptides of the resistant starch group participants were also significantly reduced, indicating that liver damage was improved.

  3. Dyslipidemia was alleviated. The total cholesterol, triglycerides and low density lipoprotein cholesterol of participants in the resistant starch group were improved, and dyslipidemia was alleviated.

Therefore, resistant starch foods undoubtedly add a strong guarantee for our healthy life.
