The detection results of resistant starch dietary fiber show significant differences.


The detection method for dietary fiber 5009.88-2023 has added a method for detecting dietary fiber in foods containing resistant starch, but many customers have reported significant deviations in the detection results. Even within the same organization, the parallelism of the same test and the consistency between two consecutive tests are not sufficient, leading to large data discrepancies that are hard to trust.

In response to this phenomenon, Beijing Xiangyu has conducted multiple tests. Taking our company's major product, Xiangyu 1945, as an example, the detection results were 72%, 57%, and 40%, including data from different laboratories within the same organization and from different organizations. Comparatively, Beijing Xiangyu has been using the AOAC2017.16 detection method for export needs for many years, and the data are much more stable, maintaining around 60%.

In light of this issue, Beijing Xiangyu has conducted in-depth research and communicated with customers, testing agencies, and the drafting units of the method.

The main issue is that the detection method for resistant starch dietary fiber in 5009.88-2023 is a translation of AOAC2017, but to facilitate operation by various agencies, some operational details are not clearly defined, especially the selection of amylase, which is not regulated. In contrast, AOAC2017 strictly defines the parameters of amylase. This leads to significant deviations in detection results.

The industry, including the drafting departments, has not yet found a good solution to this problem. Based on this, our company still trusts the results of AOAC2017.16 as the standard, with the national standard as a reference. At the same time, according to feedback from many customers, if the dietary fiber results detected by the national standard 5009.88-203 using Beijing Xiangyu resistant starch are between 55%-65%, they can be used; please treat results that are too high or too low with caution.
